The history of Carlsbad (incorporated in 1952) is associated with the purest of elements on earth – water. When you begin your search for Carlsbad real estate, you will be tapping into an area whose humble beginnings started with one simple digging of a well.
Originally the area of Carlsbad was the home of the LuiseÒo people, who settled around what is now known as the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. In the 1800’s, former sea captain John Frazier arrived in the area and discovered that his land offered some incredible water after digging a well. Possibly one of the first water entrepreneurs, Frazier began offering his water at the nearby train station. He became so popular that the train station was named after him and is remembered as Frazier’s station.
Four more businessmen, Gerhard Schutte, Samuel Church Smith, D.D.Wadsworth and Henry Nelson then formed a partnership called Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company. What they had discovered through tests was that the water was very similar to the water from one of the most renowned spas in the Czech Republic, Karlovy Vary (now a sister city) – they named their company after this region, and soon the name stuck to the town. Carlsbad, CA was born.
Visitors began to flock to the area because of its location and climate, and the ‘discovery’ of the now famous fresh water supply. The town grew through new businesses, tourism, and agriculture, as did the residential population that found Carlsbad properties to be an incredible investment. Even though the area is no longer used as farmland, the original spirit still remains – you can even still visit the site of John Frazier’s original well in Alt Carlsbad.
